Dream house, part deux

It will definitely be interesting when we start looking for a house. I'm in our "starter home" now, and FI will move in after the wedding in October. I hope our next house will be our last house purchase. I don't want to have to move again 10 years or so later. I HATE moving! I have a lot of things I'm looking for in the house, though.

My house right now technically has 4 bedrooms, since the basement is finished and there's a room down there. One of the bedrooms is the "harp room" because the harps can't go down all those stairs. Little kids couldn't sleep downstairs. So, that only leaves 2 bedrooms upstairs, including the master. This is why we'll have to move eventually - not enough room, since we want 2 or 3 kids.

My basement has a nice bar (not wet) area downstairs, which is really nice for entertaining. There's a fairly good sized area for the tv and couches and also a 1/2 bath. I have a living room, but no dining room right now. My kitchen is a pretty good size, but I am already using every last bit of cabinet space because of all my cooking equipment!

Here are some things I would love to have in our next house:

- Formal living room
- Formal dining room
- Den or extra first floor bedroom to be a harp room
- Flat driveway (unloading the harp on inclines is more dangerous and much harder!)
- Only 1 or 2 steps up to the front door/porch (again, for the harps)
- Finished basement, preferably with a bar area and area for kids to play
- At least 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths
- Not too big of a yard (pain to mow), but a good size for children to play
- Big kitchen (preferably with white cabinets) with lots of storage space (I enjoy cooking and have lots of cooking paraphenalia)
- Master bed with walk-in closet, preferably with attached bath with double vanity

- In a good school district

- Lots of natural light in the house (I love a bright house!)

- Hopefully some sort of deck/patio for the grill and an outside table

Yes, yes, I know I'm picky! I think we'll have to begin our search for a house a while before we actually plan to move. Some of the things mentioned above (steps, flat driveway) are definitely non-negotiable. Some of the others are, but I hope we can find a house that will be our dream house, without needing much work. Since we won't be moving until we at least already have 1 kid or I'm pregnant, it's not going to be easy to do much fixing up. Neither FI or I are exactly handy, and I'm so busy already with teaching and playing harp/meeting with brides, I don't know when we'd have the time!

So that I have a picture on this post, here's a pretty kitchen I found on Better Homes and Gardens:

I love that kitchen, and am a big fan of Colonial style homes, too. And I love that your must have list is so detailed---because that is exactly how mine is:) The problem comes when you try to get an affordable price for all of those 'must haves' but oh well. I've come to accept that I have expensive tastes.

I have come to accept it, too, that I have expensive tastes. :-) You're right - I'm sure I could find that house, but at an affordable price? Sigh - probably not.

Ahhh....house hunting. I love it. I'm addicted to gundaker.com and I also love colonial homes. Its my dream for one...with a huge open kitchen, just like your photo. They're out there. I've seen them. I find homes and I send my fiance the link and he says, ummm...are we looking at houses? But I figure its okay to look. And open houses? Those are the best. I might just get him in one and he won't be able to turn back!!

PS we missed you at the GNO!!

We're not looking, either. I was curious, though, what home prices were like so I did spend a while searching homes in the area a week or two ago. :-) Glad to know I'm not the only one who does that!

If you see a good one, let me know! We could go to the open house together. I've only been to a few when I was looking for my house a couple of years ago.

Thanks! (In regards to the GNO) I really wanted to go, but I had an early evening wedding in IL. My FI went with me all the way there (a bit over an hour), helped out there in the heat (it was outside), and back. I would have felt really bad ditching him to meet up with you all. I was sad I had to miss it, though!

I have next month's on my calendar and plan to be there (although I'm not sure where there is yet). :-)

Love the list! Many of those things are on my must have list as well. It is good to know exactly what you are looking for. That kitchen is just lovely! I really like white cabinets too. We have started looking at houses and depending on what area you are looking for, I might have some suggestions! :)
